i still can’t believe that the incredibles is likely set in the 1960s

the entire film is designed with classic 50s-60s art styles, a lot of the interior design of the parr household is in 60s style, fashion is generally reminiscent of the 60s, in the beginning of the film all the photographs and video are grainy and shot in 60s style, the technology in bob’s office is very dated, when edna is going on her “no capes” rant she cites superheroes who died from cape designs and says their deaths were in the 50s, all the cars in the film have 60s models, any advanced tech we really see is seemingly kept secret from the general public, here’s a newspaper from the film:

Holy fuck

fun things to do as an alternative for self-harm

source: calm harm (app for android and ios)

Comfort

  • Stick some sticking plaster to where you want to hurt yourself to remind yourself that you are letting yourself heal.
  • Stick some fake tattoos to where you want to hurt yourself. Remind yourself to do one comforting thing everytime you see them.
  • Think of three people who have given you the best smiles. Could you call one of them for a chat?
  • Record yourself saying three positive things about something that matters and listen to it as many times as you like.
  • Eat something you enjoy, slowly and savour it.
  • If someone you love was feeling sad say out loud or in your head what would you say to them. Now say those words to yourself.
  • Cuddle someone or something.
  • Sing or hum your favorite songs, ones that comfort you when you hear them.
  • Look at a book that has pictures or wording you love.
  • Think of a relaxing place and in your mind run through all the comforting things you do when you are there.
  • Visualise a comforting image. Think of all the things in that scene that make you feel comforted and cared for.
  • Give yourself a hug, or gently rock your body.
  • Pick a comfort spot and sit down. Think of what you can feel, see and hear that’s calm and comforting.
  • Watch your favorite movie.
  • Take a bath.
  • Make a memory box of your favorite things over the years.
  • Paint on a paper all the colors that comfort you.

Distraction

  • Roll a dice. Think of that many numbers of things that have made you feel good.
  • How many male pop singers can you name?
  • How many songs can you remember starting with the letter i?
  • Count how many patterns you can see in your room.
  • Count the colors you can see in the room you are in.
  • How many capital cities can you think of?
  • Think of a country for every letter of the alphabet.
  • Are you able to bake something?
  • Try and go for a walk.
  • Find and print photographs of your favorite people.
  • Teach yourself how to make some origami figures.

Expressing yourself

  • Say out loud what’s bothering you. Can you change one negative word into a positive one?
  • Can you ask to your friends to write something about you on a sticky note? Stick these in your room.
  • Stick some of your positive thoughts on a sticky paper near your bed or near where you harm.
  • Write something that’s upsetting you on a paper and tear it up.
  • Keep a diary of your thoughts and feelings.
  • Play, sing or come up with a serie of tunes that express how you feel.
  • Express through movement what you feel – dance, run, walk, jump.

Release

  • Get a red pen and draw where you want to hurt yourself.
  • Press down on where you want to hurt yourself with something blunt, do not break the skin. Just work on applying pressure and then reduce.
  • Hold some ice cubes in your hands or where you want to harm.
  • Squeeze a rubber ball very hard.
  • Find a pillow and punch out how you feel.
  • Go somewhere private and shout whatever you want.

i remember when i was doing a religious simpsons painting in my painting 1 class and the professor had been talking about trends that annoyed him, specifically people painting bart back when he taught in the 90′s. i took my painting off the easel and turned it around and my 50-some year old professor had to cope with seeing imagery of bart simpson as a cherub
