☆ they’re a team of superheroes that travel through time saving history. that should be reason enough.
but just in case it isn’t:
☆ badass female superheroes. the show starts out with two of them, but the upcoming season promises six regulars, which outnumbers the men.
☆ the women are constantly proven to be able to take care of themselves and never once shown to be “damsels in distress”
☆ the show starts out with two black characters. the new season promises a black woman, a muslim woman, and an asian woman.
☆ the team captain is a bisexual female badass
☆ there is a canon wlw relationship between two of the main characters!
☆ interracial couples
☆ a bisexual woman, a lesbian woman, and a bisexual man are all regulars, with a gay man and a man that is confirmed lgbt but with an unconfirmed sexuality as recurring members
☆ lgbt characters aren’t made a big deal. the show portrays them naturally and normalizes the relationships.
☆ the male characters essentially destroy toxic masculinity. ray and nate are close friends that are really affectionate with each other. the men constantly show their respect of the female members of the team, and men are allowed to be sensitive without it being made fun of.
☆ they travel to time periods that deal with serious issues (i.e., saving slaves from a plantation during the civil war)
☆ powerful women in history are represented instead of focusing solely on the men! (mileva einstein, badass guinevere, helen of troy becoming a warrior, merlin as a woman…)
☆ they consistently have the straight white male characters assert to other, sexist straight white males that sara, a bisexual woman, is their captain
☆ they also have sara assert herself by kicking the sexist men’s asses
☆ the character development is so spot on. even with so many characters and a rotating cas, everyone is given such strong arcs and meaningful screen time. if you don’t like a character at first, i can almost guarantee you that you will by the end of the season.
☆ sara charms the women of every time period she visits and its wonderful.
☆ you learn about history!!! granted its sometimes vague and not always accurate but it’s still so interesting.
☆ magic and sci-fi all come together which is so much fun.
☆ the show is just utterly hilarious. you can tell the writers have a lot of fun with what they’re doing, and everyone is lovable and will make you laugh all the time.
☆ just “sometimes we screw things up for the better”
☆ references to the best parts of pop culture (episodes with george lucas, elvis, and more)
☆ they’re outcasts and misfits and that’s the whole premise of the show! that they mess up all the time and they’re destructive and careless but at the end of the day, they’re heroes.
☆ overall it’s just a spectacular show. it’s fast paced, there’s so much action and adventure, even the villains are amazing, it’s funny and meaningful and one of the most underrated shows i’ve seen in a long time.
☆ if that doesn’t convince you, i don’t know what will.
When it comes to stuff like racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, I’ve found it’s usually way better to think to yourself ‘I don’t want to be’ than ‘I’m not’.
I.e. if someone goes ‘that thing you just did is ableist’, instead of going ‘I’m not ableist, I don’t hate disabled people!’ it’s usually a lot better to go ‘I don’t want to be ableist, I should rethink what I’m doing/saying/etc in light of that fact’. Because that shifts your thinking so rather than jumping straight into denial and attempts to defend your character, you’re instead more inclined to look at how your actions could be misrepresenting your intentions. Or whether you’ve overlooked something, been callous, or acted in ignorance.
The amount of practice to do this. More pranks like this and less of the ones that seem to be for shock and YouTube hits.
Fun fact: this is my university, so I know some of the behind the scenes tidbits. This was the first time they had all played it together. Most of the people had the sheet music a little in advance, but it was the first time everyone played together.
